En parcourant l’espace d’exposition, imaginé comme la caverne de Platon, vous pourrez jouer avec votre perception pour mieux décoder les origines des images, les mises en abyme, les faux- semblants, les détournements, les appropriations et plus encore. A force de noyer le poisson, sortirez-vous libre de la caverne ?

Xavier Pinel questionne la perception du réel à travers la fiction et inversement. Comme ses pairs, il fait dialoguer les techniques anciennes et nouvelles. Images fixes et images en mouvement apparaissent aussi bien en peinture, photographie, vidéo et installation. La même image peut subir d’infinies traductions. Ces réversibilités sont au cœur de la réflexion de l’artiste. A force de démultiplier les dimensions et les sens, est-il possible de mieux mesurer notre perception ? Pouvons-vous atteindre une forme de vérité, d’absolu... ?
Cet « enjeu perceptif » questionne aussi « un enjeu artistique ». Quel est le statut de l’objet produit par l’artiste ? Et lorsqu’il délègue son geste créatif à une machine, à une intelligence artificielle, quel est cet objet ? Est-ce une œuvre... ?
Xavier Pinel crée au bénéfice du doute et de l’expérimentation, mais aussi du hasard et des rencontres. A propos, les œuvres de cette exposition ont été conçues lors d’une résidence à la SCAC Marestaing en juillet 2022. Il a su contempler ce lieu et s’en saisir. Ses œuvres en sont à la fois les témoins et une mémoire mouvante. On y retrouve Doff, l’artiste qui partageait ce temps de création avec lui. On les voit jouer avec leur propre image et savoir-faire divulgués. Ce face à face, ce jeu d’apparition et de disparition dans l’atelier, n’est pas moins qu’une « autre dimension » de l’autoportrait.

L’exposition présente les œuvres réalisées par Xavier Pinel dans le cadre d’une résidence à la SCAC Marestaing en collaboration avec l’UCRM.

Depuis 2020, le Conseil départemental soutient la SCAC Marestaing pour l’organisation de cette résidence commune entre un.e artiste
africain et un.e artiste de la Haute-Garonne.

Le choix de l’artiste du département se fait en collaboration avec l’UCRM.

Créée en 2017, la SCAC Marestaing, Société Coopérative d’Art Contemporain, reçoit de mai à octobre des sculpteurs et sculptrices africain·es en résidence et les expose. Lieu agréé par l’Institut français (Visas pour la création).

L’unité culture de L’UCRM, Union Cépière Robert Monnier, conseille, forme et accompagne les artistes.

Xavier Pinel undertakes an experimental artistic evasion. You are invited to participate and “drown the fish” alongside him! How? By exploring the exhibition space, conceived as Plato’s cave, you can play with your perception to better decode the origins of images, mise-en-abyme, illusions, misdirections, appropriations, and much more. By the time you finish “drowning the fish,” will you emerge free from the cave?

Xavier Pinel questions the perception of reality through fiction—and vice versa. Like his peers, he engages in a dialogue between old and new techniques. Still and moving images appear through painting, photography, video, and installation alike. The same image can undergo infinite translations. These reversibilities lie at the heart of the artist’s reflection. By multiplying dimensions and senses, can we better gauge our perception? Can we reach a form of truth, an absolute…?

This “perceptual challenge” also raises “an artistic challenge.” What is the status of the object produced by the artist? And when he delegates his creative act to a machine or artificial intelligence, what is this object? Is it a work of art…?

Xavier Pinel creates in the spirit of doubt and experimentation, but also embraces chance and encounters. The works in this exhibition were conceived during a residency at SCAC Marestaing in July 2022. The artist observed the space and appropriated it. His works bear witness to it and act as a moving memory. Doff, the artist who shared this creation period with him, is also present. Together, they play with their own images and disclosed skills. This interplay, this game of appearance and disappearance in the studio, represents another dimension of the self-portrait.

PARTNERSHIP
‍The exhibition presents works created by Xavier Pinel during his residency at SCAC Marestaing in collaboration with UCRM. Since 2020, the Departmental Council has supported SCAC Marestaing in organizing this residency program, which pairs an African artist with an artist from Haute-Garonne. The selection of the local artist is made in collaboration with UCRM.
