Ne vous y trompez pas, ce titre ne fait en aucun cas l’apologie du développement personnel. C’est simplement la traduction littérale d’un concept kantien : « Ding an sich ». Il désigne la réalité au-delà de toute expérience sensible. Pourtant même si nos sens ne les perçoivent pas, nous savons désormais que certaines choses existent sans que nous puissions les saisir. L'entièreté du spectre électromagnétique demeure par exemple hors de portée de notre perception. Les créations qui sont exposées à l’Ostal d’Occitanie explorent une manière de mettre en scène le concept de chose en soi, qui définit pourtant quelque chose qui ne peut être appréhendé par la conscience humaine. Mais cette thématique n’est pas étrangère à l’art, j’ai simplement insisté sur le caractère inconcevable du réel au-delà de nos sens. On pouvait lire au début du siècle dernier :
« Qu’il soit peinture, sculpture, poésie ou musique, l’art n’a d’autre objet que d’écarter tout ce qui nous masque la réalité, pour nous faire mettre face à face avec la réalité même. » Henri Bergson, Le rire.
Mais qu’entendait Bergson par « réalité même » ? Mystère...

D’autres thèmes sont aussi abordés comme la synchronisation de nos représentations du réel, le caractère accidentel de la tradition métaphysique dans laquelle nous sommes nés ou encore une réflexion sur sur la notion de théodicée*.

Do not be mistaken: this title is by no means an endorsement of personal development. It is simply the literal translation of a Kantian concept: Ding an sich. It refers to reality beyond any sensory experience. Yet even if our senses cannot perceive them, we now know that certain things exist without being fully graspable. For example, the entire electromagnetic spectrum remains beyond our perception.

The works presented at the Ostal d’Occitanie explore ways of staging the concept of the thing-in-itself, which nonetheless defines something that cannot be apprehended by human consciousness. This theme is not foreign to art; I have simply insisted on the inconceivable nature of reality beyond our senses. As was written at the beginning of the last century:

But what did Bergson mean by “reality itself”? Mystery…

Other themes are also explored in this exhibition, such as the synchronization of our representations of reality, the accidental nature of the metaphysical tradition into which we are born, and reflections on the notion of theodicy*.
